Condenser microphones can be divided into large and small diaphragms


Diaphragm diameter is equal to or more than 3/4’’ we called it large diaphragm mic. General speaking, large diaphragm features max vocal, high sensitivity, especially the ability to pick up low frequency. Large diaphragm used to vocal recording because they add harmonics to the sound that make it sound smoother.


Most professionals believe that a microphone with diaphragm diameters less than 5/8 inches belongs to small diaphragm microphones.


Small diaphragm mics are good at capturing high frequency and instantaneous signals. It comes with good clarity in high/mid frequency, moderate sensitivity. It is easy to maintenance, also strong adaptability to the environment. It is often used in field or voice recording. Meanwhile, for musical instruments, especially percussion instruments, it is more appropriate to pick up at high frequencies.
